New AP Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 42mm Black Ceramic with Méga Tapisserie Dial
It’s almost a black beast, but with a more modern dial…
About two years ago, Audemars Piguet released an absolutely stunning watch, the Black Ceramic Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph, aka the Black Beast. One of the brand’s most important watches (at least in the modern era), the watch is monochrome and high-tech, blending the classic look of the 1993 Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph with a modern, stealthy case and bracelet. As part of the new replica watches review released by Audemars Piguet for its 2025 collection, this watch (reference 26238CE) has an even darker look. While we initially decided to call it the “Blacker Than Black Beast,” things are actually a little more complicated than that.
What is the AP Beast? Well, we have to go back to the early 1990s, when the brand was struggling to sell its classic luxury sports watch, the Royal Oak Jumbo – it was a very different time. To boost sales and attract eyeballs, then-AP chairman Stephen Urquhart hired an outside designer—Emmanuel Gueit, then a new employee—to reinvent the RO’s entire concept and once again create something shockingly new. “Something that young people would want to wear,” Gueit explains. The result was the 1993 Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 25721ST, a watch that was immediately nicknamed “The Beast”—and indeed, it was called that back in the day.
